Abstract<\/h4>\n

What plant foods did hunter-gatherers in N-W Europe eat? Was the way hunter-gatherers and farmers used and interacted with plants fundamentally different? How did prehistoric farmers grow their crops?<\/p>\n

The scale and nature of human-plant interactions and plant subsistence strategies in early prehistory have been rigorously debated. Although past understandings of prehistoric hunter-gatherer societies have tended to underestimate the role of plant foods, recent research in Scotland and Southern Norway has revealed the importance of plant gathering within broader Mesolithic hunter-gatherer strategies.<\/p>\n

Likewise, there is now considerable archaeobotanical evidence that both cereal cultivation and wild plant gathering were key strategies for the first farmers. The nature of the cultivation methods used is less well understood, but recent evidence suggests that a range of approaches was adopted, highlighting the adaptability of early farmers to varied conditions. At the same time, wild resources were important for early farmers in this area, with evidence that this gathering and processing was, on occasion, both systematic and intensive. A key question is whether the systematic gathering was a practice akin to wild plant management, as extensively documented in diverse hunter-gatherer societies worldwide.<\/p>\n

This presentation will examine these issues, using archaeobotanical case studies from Scotland and Southern Norway, together with wider evidence from stable isotope studies and experimental research.<\/p>\n

Rosemary Rhiannon Bishop<\/a> is an archaeobotanist and environmental archaeologist at the University of Stavanger, Norway. Her research focuses on the archaeology of Scotland, North-West Europe and the North Atlantic islands. I am particularly interested in hunter-gatherer plant use, the changing nature of people-plant interactions during the transition from hunter-gathering to agriculture, and changing agricultural practices in relation to climate, environmental and social change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
